biosand filters

Since 2008, GARD (Grassroots Assistance in Rural Development) has been at the forefront of implementing biosand filters as a crucial point-of-use water treatment system in communities across Uganda. Biosand filters, adapted from traditional slow sand filters, harness biological and physical processes within a sand column covered with a biofilm to effectively remove pathogens and suspended solids from water. These filters have demonstrated remarkable efficacy in eliminating heavy metals, turbidity, bacteria, viruses, and protozoa while addressing discoloration, odour, and unpleasant taste in water. Studies have consistently shown a correlation between the use of biosand filters and a decrease in the occurrence of waterborne illnesses like diarrhea. Recognizing their effectiveness, ease of use, and affordability, biosand filters have become a cornerstone of appropriate technology in developing countries. Over the years, GARD has donated and implemented approximately 300 biosand filters, significantly improving access to safe and clean drinking water for countless individuals and communities.
