spring protection

Since 2008, GARD (Grassroots Assistance in Rural Development) has been dedicated to protecting Uganda's essential water resources, especially in Lira and the surrounding areas. Our journey began when Peter Alele, a trusted friend from Adakingo village in Northern Uganda, invited us to witness the consistent flow of a spring within the village. Recognizing the importance of these springs, we focused on safeguarding them rather than implementing large-scale water catchments. This decision ensures that villagers have direct access to clean water while preserving runoff for agricultural use. Over the years, GARD has worked diligently to safeguard approximately 25 springs in the Lira area alone, benefitting at least 250 households per spring. These protected springs provide a reliable source of clean water and complement household water treatment methods like biosand filters. Through our ongoing efforts, we strive to improve water access, sanitation, and overall community well-being across Uganda.
